Somerset Surge Towards County Championship Lead After Toppling Essex
In a two-day wicket-fest at Taunton, Somerset closed the gap on County Championship table-toppers Essex, securing a vital three-wicket victory over the league leaders. The thrilling encounter saw both sides capitulate in their first innings, setting the stage for a nail-biting run chase.
Essex were bowled out for a mere 138 in their second innings on Saturday, after being rolled for 156 in the opening day’s play. In response, Somerset were bundled out for 128, but a spirited team effort in the chase saw them overhaul the target of 167 in 44.1 overs.
Australia batter Matt Renshaw (35) and opener Sean Dickson (42) set the tone with a 75-run opening stand, before Andy Umeed (34) and Tom Banton (29) steadied the ship in the middle order. The three-wicket triumph snapped Somerset’s run of four straight draws to begin the season, and they now sit just two points behind Essex at the top of the table.

England’s Joe Root is closing in on a quick-fire century for Yorkshire against Glamorgan. Root, who scored 119 against Derbyshire last week, was unbeaten on 92 from 90 balls, sharing an unbroken 201-run stand with Finlay Bean (140 not out) before bad light stopped play.
“With England not in Test action until July, Root could enjoy an extended spell with Yorkshire in both red and white-ball cricket this season, as the focus shifts to T20 cricket in the early international summer.”
