Somerset Secure Signing of Archie Vaughan on Professional Contract
On November 1st, 2022, Somerset announced the signing of Archie Vaughan, the 18-year-old son of former England captain Michael Vaughan, to a professional contract until the end of the 2026 season. Archie, a top-order batter and off-spinner, has been part of the academy setup at Taunton and made his debut for Somerset’s second XI last year.
This winter, Archie showcased his talent at the T20 Abu Dhabi Counties Super Cup, where he scored 35 runs from 28 balls as Somerset secured a third-place finish. Commenting on the contract, Archie expressed his excitement, saying:
“It’s something that I’ve worked extremely hard for and it’s something that I’ve strived for since I was a kid. To get the opportunity for a club where I’ve really enjoyed myself over the last few years is an honor.”
Archie will be looking to learn from the more experienced players in the dressing room and contribute to the second team whenever he gets the chance. Somerset’s director of cricket, Andy Hurry, praised the young cricketer’s work ethic and impressive on-field performances, which have led to his well-deserved second XI opportunities.
Archie is one of several sons of former England captains making their way in the game. Other notable examples include Josh de Caires, whose father is Sky Sports pundit Michael Atherton, and Andrew Flintoff’s sons, Corey and Rocky, who have featured for Lancashire’s second XI, with 16-year-old Rocky recently hitting a century against Warwickshire.
