Raman Subba Row, a Versatile Cricketing Stalwart, Passes Away at 92
South London, April 17, 2024 – The cricket world mourns the loss of Raman Subba Row, a former England cricketer who played over a dozen Test matches as an amateur between 1958 and 1961. Subba Row, who hailed from an Anglo-Indian background, passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind a lasting legacy as both a player and an influential administrator.
Subba Row’s cricketing career was marked by his surprising retirement at the peak of his powers, a decision that was uncommon in the modern game. However, the former Northamptonshire captain lived in an era where “gentlemen” players often prioritized financial stability over sporting achievement.
“Subba Row’s cricketing journey was marked by his versatility.”
After his playing days, Subba Row made a significant impact on the game as an administrator. He served as the chairman of the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB) from 1985 to 1990, during which he played a pivotal role in the transition of power from the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) to the International Cricket Council (ICC). This move, championed by Subba Row, helped to shift the balance of power in cricket away from its traditional centers in England and Australia, towards the growing influence of India.
Although Subba Row later had some reservations about the way the ICC exercised its power, his contributions were instrumental in shaping the game’s global landscape. In recognition of his service, he was awarded a CBE in 1991 for his contributions to cricket.
Subba Row’s cricketing journey was marked by his versatility. In addition to his successful playing career, he held various roles, including serving as England’s tour manager to India in 1981-82 and officiating as an ICC referee in 41 Test matches and 119 one-day internationals between 1992 and 2001.
Throughout his life, Subba Row maintained strong ties with the Indian subcontinent, reflecting his Anglo-Indian heritage. His passing is a significant loss for the cricket community, and his legacy as a player, administrator, and trailblazer will be long-remembered by fans and admirers alike.
