After a whirlwind journey from Melbourne to the northeast of England, seasoned fast bowler Scott Boland is all set to make his debut for Durham in the County Championship’s second round, which kicks off on Friday. This marks Boland’s first county stint, despite his impressive credentials that make him a perfect fit for the four-day format.
Boland, known for his expertise with the Australian Kookaburra ball, is poised to showcase his relentless, muscular seam-up bowling in the backyard cricket-esque conditions of the County Championship. Durham, fresh off an impressive promotion in 2023, have secured the services of the right-armer, who boasts an impressive tally of 380 first-class wickets at an average of 24.
“I’ve always wanted to play in the County Championship,” says Boland, as the team bus snakes its way down to the Midlands from Chester-le-street. “But I bowl a lot of overs for Victoria, and so previously I’ve used the off-season for a break.”
The 35-year-old, who played a key role in Australia’s World Test Championship triumph at the Oval last year, is eager to make his mark in the club cricket environment. Despite a brief blip in the recent Ashes series, where England’s Bazball approach targeted him, Boland remains a highly sought-after talent, and Australia have continued to back him with a central contract renewal.
With Durham’s Matthew Potts and Brydon Carse also in the mix for England’s upcoming West Indies Tests, Boland is looking forward to sharing his expertise on the Kookaburra ball and beach cricket-esque conditions.
“If they want to chat about bowling, I’m an open book. I have bowled my whole career with the Kookaburra, and any questions about that, or anything, I’ll answer.”
